UNDERSTANDING ABUSE
Abuse is NEVER the victims fault. Abuse is a pattern of violent and or coercive behavior used to establish and maintain power and control over an intimate partner, ex-partner or family member. Abuse can happen regardless of a persons socio-economic class, race, social, sexual orientation, gender, religious or cultural group.
Some examples of abuse include:
Verbal: name calling, put-downs, threats to hurt or kill, blaming Emotional: Isolation from others, ridiculing, criticizing, accusations of affairs, harming family pets, humiliation
Financial or Resource: preventing you from getting a job, taking your money, making you ask for an allowance, not allowing you to know about or have access to family income
Sexual: forcing unwanted sex, constant sexual demands, wanting sex after abuse
Physical: Choked you, throwing objects at you, slapping, hitting, kicking, hair pulling, threats with a weapon
What you can do to help -
Ask specific questions - "has he/she ever hit or pushed you?"
Do not criticize the abuser - criticizing her/his partner can cause her/him to be less likely to seek out your support
Listen with out judging - Believe her/him, show that you care
Do not make choices for her - abusers often limit their partners ability to make choices, victims need to make decisions to regain control of their lives
Encourage her/him to write things down - documenting the abuse, severity, frequency, date, location, witnesses, police and medical reporting, etc. And to keep all documents in a sale place
Encourage her/him to develop a safety plan - a plan of who she/he can contact, developing a code word with friends, neighbors and children, keeping a second set of keys, important papers, records of bank accounts, social security cards, medications, birth certificates and identification, etc in a safe but easily accessible place, having a list of important phone numbers; the kids schools, doctors, day care, safe haven, etc. Installing lighting outside the home, purchasing rope ladders to escape from second floor windows, inform co-workers of the situation and filing a protection order, calling the police or sheriff's office
Victims of Federal crimes will be served.
