Appleseed Community Mental Health Center recognizes Mental Health Month by offering free events

May is Mental Health Month. Mental Health America reports, “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health of people of all ages. Now, more than ever, it is critical to reduce the stigma around mental health struggles, because that stigma often prevents individuals from seeking help.”

Appleseed Community Mental Health Center (“Appleseed”) is offering FREE events throughout May aimed at reducing the impact of COVID-19 and other mental health stressors. You do not need to be a current or past client of Appleseed to benefit from these events!

  • Trauma Sensitive Yoga; Every Tuesday from 2-2:30 pm & Wednesday at 5-5:30pm: This is a 30-minute, pre-recorded beginner’s yoga class designed for all levels. Activities include chair yoga, mat yoga, mindfulness, grounding, breathing exercises, and positive affirmations. Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and choose a sturdy chair that won’t slide for chair yoga. This event is ongoing.   • Positive Mental Health: Self-Care Training; May 26, 2021 from 12p-1p: Jerry Strausbaugh, Executive Director of Appleseed, is presenting a free 1- hour training on Positive Mental Health: Self-Care. The training will be offered over Zoom. Free CEU for Counselors, Social Workers, and Marriage & Family Therapists.   • Depression Screening; May 27, 8:30a-6pm: Appleseed is offering free 30 minute depression screenings with a qualified mental health specialist. If you believe you might suffer from depression, schedule your appointment by going to “Free Depression Screening” under “Calendar & Events” on the agency’s website at www.appleseedmentalhealth.com.

  • Self-Improvement and Change Group (SSIC);Every Thursday from 6:00-7:30pm. A second SSIC group will be offered starting Monday, May 27 from 10:30am-noon: Appleseed offers a free Self-Improvement and Change Group to address mental health and substance use relapse and recidivism using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to develop coping and self-control skills, psychoeducation of substances, and identify prosocial thinking and supports. The SSIC Groups will be available through August 31, 2021. Groups are available in person at Appleseed or over Zoom.
